If you are looking for up-to-date information on the latest industrial storage trends, then you have come to the right place.

We plan to discuss all kinds of storage ideas, applications and systems here. Sometimes we will get very detailed on a particular product or storage need, other times it may be more general storage related topics. Either way, our goal is to educate (and sometimes entertain), so grab a snack or drink (coffee, tea, water) and join us.

I had coffee with a friend the other day, and he told me this story about a crape myrtle. He said there was this out-of-control crape myrtle in his front yard that was driving him crazy. When he moved into his house ten years or so ago it wasn’t a huge tree, but each year it’s grown larger and larger. When the tree was in bloom, and it rained, the limbs drooped down and blocked the driveway. He started going out after rains and pulling branches down and cutting off the flowers. What he learned eventually – and what some of you may already know – is that when you trim one bloom, 2, 3 or 4 more grow in its place. So each year, the limbs got heavier and droopier. Then he tried to cut off some of the branches that seemed to be the biggest offenders (the droopiest). With no chainsaw, this meant a good day’s worth of work to get one or 2 branches down and cut up into small enough pieces to be discarded.

As he said: “I’m not an arborist, I’m not a tree guy. I’m no expert.” So he got fed up, did some research, ask around and called in a tree guy for help. The tree guy and his crew came in a took care of everything, and now the tree is a beautiful part of the yard instead of a constant hassle. He finished his story by saying quite sincerely, “You have no idea what a relief it was to take care of that tree. It troubled me for a long time, and when it rained it was much worse. I don’t know why I waited that long.”

So, you might be thinking, ‘Hey, I’m reading a blog on a storage website, why are you telling me this story?’ Good question. And the reason is that this same idea goes for planning and designing storage systems. When you go off to work, whether it’s to the office, warehouse, library, manufacturing plant, operating room, hospital pharmacy, museum or police precinct, you have specific tasks to do. Unless you spend your day working with storage, the chances are that you are not a storage expert. You should do what you do best, and leave the storage projects to the experts. Those small issues that usually cause little concern can cause significant worry when it rains (so to speak).

What if you need room for a new collection of books or artifacts? What if you lose a critical document, part or surgical tool? What if a piece of evidence is compromised? All of these events take a small issue and compound it exponentially, and then you have to deal with all these extra (and unnecessary) worries. So take some advice from my friend, if you are experiencing storage problems, don’t wait too long to call in an expert.
